I've been watching this story develop since last January when Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) recalled his experience on Thom Hartmann's regular "Friday Brunch With Bernie" last winter. You will no doubt find these links encouraging.

As a builder of detailed ("from scatch") historically-themed replication birdhouses and nativity creche display stall;, hearing Sen. Sanders describe his efforts to get the Smithsonian to sell more products that are actually made IN America has been very heartening to a 60 year old newbie in this line of niche crafts work.

Happy reading!

Sincerely,
Steven Barrett

How many stores were visited while you were at Grand Canyon? Additionally, how accurate are your results? It seems to be you may be suffering from tunnel vision. Have you relayed all the facts? Or, just the ones that support your ideology?

Have been preaching the same message in SD for years. If we can work with hundreds of native families and sell millions of dollars of art in 15 years, why can't Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands and Devil's Tower do the same? Let's keep pushing the parks!

Very well written article. I must say the lure of easy money through the import business has taken its toll on our Made in USA pride. Its a shame the bill requiring our national parks to sell only American made products was withdrawn.
In any case I hope this investigation will bring these discrepancies to a head in the battle to get not only Native made products but Made in USA a well deserved boost.

As a Native Artist and jeweler, I can tell you that these practices are destroying the market beyond all hope of recovery. Wealthy buyers from gift shops come to wholesale shows demanding (yes, demanding!) prices that are cheaper than Chinese made junk from Native artists, and when they don't get what they want they will just walk away. To make matters worse, there are a couple of unscrupulous tribal organizations that set up sweatshop labor that make highly substandard items to sell to these people cheaper than they could get from Asia. This, coupled with the influx of "Traders" who sell Native made at the wholesale level that turn over quantities of product for little over their cost from the already under paid artist has made it almost impossible for artists to make a living at all.
